Joanna's first entry into the Austin art scene began with a not so simple conversation around mental illness. For people who have suffered, it's hard to put the experience into words. For people who haven't, it's hard to imagine. In 2020 she created her first mini series; a 6 piece body of work that explored and visualized what people who struggle with depression and anxiety experience. More often than not, it's easier to empathize with what we are able to see. This led to her first showcase with Bodies of Work followed by various showcases with Art Island ATX, Pietschhouse, Red Light Lit and Convergent arts. While she may explore a variety of materials, color schemes, styles and techniques, the center of her work will always remain the same: capturing the weight of moments we all silently carry and making it visible.
